ECF has a long standing supportive relationship with Khuphuka, an NGO based at Mqatsheni location, Underberg, under KwaSani Municipality. Initially Khuphuka focused on Home Based Care, Orphan and Vulnerable Children, Youth and Development and Food Security programs, but it has now added a Sexual Reproductive and Health Rights programme to its services. The Enhancing Care Foundation has been part of the Khuphuka family since June 2012. This was a crucial time as Khuphuka was undergoing some difficulties. ECF stepped in and assisted by providing support to Khuphuka in the form of intervening on the board, mentoring the Director of Khuphuka and assisting in the guidance of the management structure to ensure the continued optimal functioning of the organisation. ECF Director Dr Rosie Mngqibisa chairs the board and Lungi Nyantsa is the secretary.

Khuphuka has Community Care Givers (CCGs) that work in the surrounding community of Mqathseni. The CCGs are privately funded and therefore training for them is a challenge. To help Khuphuka and the community, ECF has provided the CCGs with HIV training and updates at no cost, and continues to provide telephonic support.

Part of Khuphuka’s mission is to empower the community through information and advocacy services. In order to achieve this, Khuphuka works with the local high school and aims to empower individuals by disseminating information which they would otherwise have difficulty accessing. ECF has played a role in this by providing an information officer who visits the school once a month and advises the students on career choices and other relevant subjects such as how to apply to tertiary institutions, what to do if you cannot afford tuition, etc.

The impact Khuphuka has on the community of Mqatsheni continues to be very positive and much appreciated by the community. ECF envisages supporting Khuphuka to continue its good work long into the future.
