Early Childhood Development (ECD)

Funder: Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD)

In 2014, The Gauteng Department of Social Development commissioned ECF to conduct a large scale year long assessment of early childhood development of children attending creches within the Province.

The Early Childhood Development (ECD) Programme involved the assessment of over 30000 children between the ages of 1 and 5 years of age in almost 650 creches across all five metropolitans and district municipalities in Gauteng. The bulk of these children attended creches which were receiving funding from GDSD either in the form of food parcels, financial assistance, or both. The intention behind such funding was to provide children with nutritious meals.

The main objective of the ECD assessments was to determine if the provision of funding for nutritious meals had a positive impact on the child‘s development. The assessment involved conducting and recording both anthropometric and psychometric measurements for each child. The assessment was further strengthened with the inclusion of a comprehensive Parent’s Questionnaire which featured a range of questions relating specifically to the child, as well as questions relating to the domestic and socio-economic context of the child’s family.
